Core Pin and Core Coatings

These special coatings change physical properties of the metal surface and create a finer microstructure finish:

• Decrease soldering and erosion
• Lower breakage and friction
• Increase pin life while decreasing downtime
• Enable wire and EDM ability for difficult shapes
• Achieve precise gun drilling for cooling line

Prex provides two special coating types for core pins and cores: CVD and PVD. CVD coating involves heat-treating at about 2120 F (1000 C) to exact good bonding of the applied chemicals with the metal. Due to distortion possibility associated with the high heat-treat temperature, this process is limited to thicker core pins and cores.

The PVD process heat-treats at about 1060 F (500 C) to provide a variety of coatings with varying characteristics as shown in the table below. This coating process has no limitations for size or shape of the core pin or core.
